In Energy Void (1971), Noguchi takes the rigid geometry of a rectangle and moulds it into an organic shape that resists easy definition.

The emphasis on material indeterminacy reflects the East-Asian influence on the artist's work. By creating an empty space that defines the sculpture just as much as the granite does, Noguchi achieves a sense of harmony between form and the formless.
